About Waterstons

Sealing Wax makers for over 200 years, George Waterstons first established a sealing wax works in Edinburgh in 1752, later moving across from Duncans Chocolate Factory in Beaverhall Road. Since then, we’ve manufactured about 90kg of sealing wax a day from our factory in Edinburgh, and ship it right across the world from the USA to Hong Kong.

Blocks of rosin and shellac flakes, and a little colouring is used to produce our Sealing Wax, the ingredients are mixed and heated and poured by hand to be moulded. Two centuries later, it’s still produced exactly the same way, and hand finished for a superior product.

Why Bottle Wax?

Dipping bottles in wax is an age old tradition, stemming from monks in monasteries who would seal their bottles trying to keep their wine fresh. Its tradition is most famously upheld by the Kentucky Bourbon Maker’s Mark.

Cork, which is semi-permeable, can allow air and even bacteria into the bottle, for many beverages this can deteriorate the quality and flavour, unwanted if it’s it’s been carefully aged.

Whether you’re an enthusiastic amateur or a bespoke brewer, ealing your bottle with wax ensures that it will be tamper proof and- let’s be honest- it looks really amazing. Try monogramming your wax tops with a personalised seal.

How to remove wax from your bottle.

There is nothing more frustrating than staring at your favourite wine or beer through the glass bottle and not being able to indulge. Removing the wax with a knife or sharp object, you’ll find, makes opening the bottle of wine more difficult. You will spend 45 minutes frustratingly attempting to remove the wax to no avail.

For wine bottles we found that the easiest way to open is by taking the corkscrew and driving the tip of the corkscrew straight through the wax on the top of the bottle. Once you have the corkscrew down almost as far as it can go, brace the lever against the rim of the bottle neck. The two hinged lever acts like the fulcrum and when the effort is put into pulling up the handle, the corkscrew pulls up against the resistance of the cork, cracking the seal of the wax, opening the bottle of wine
